Unlike ordinary food packaging aluminum foil, the aluminum foil lining of ketchup containers must withstand multiple challenges, including acidic environments, high-temperature filling, and long-term storage. Therefore, it must meet a series of stringent requirements, each directly related to product quality and safety.
Core Requirements
1. Food-grade Safety Requirements (Top Priority)
Ketchup comes into direct contact with the aluminum foil and has a pH of approximately 3.5, classifying it as an acidic food. This makes it prone to aluminum ion migration. Therefore, safety standards must strictly adhere to relevant domestic and international regulations. Internationally, it must meet the US FDA 21 CFR 175.300 (aluminum migration <1 mg/kg food) and EU 10/2011 (aluminum migration <5 mg/kg food) standards.
Meanwhile, the aluminum foil jumbo roll must be made of 8011 or 3003 aluminum alloy, with a lead and cadmium content of ≤0.01%. The production process involves high-temperature annealing and sterilization, forming a dense oxide layer on the surface to ensure no odor, no harmful substance leaching, and no chemical reaction with the tomato sauce, guaranteeing food safety from the source.
2. Barrier Performance Requirements
Tomato sauce is rich in water and nutrients, making it highly susceptible to oxidation, spoilage, and bacterial growth due to oxygen, moisture, and light. Therefore, the aluminum foil must possess excellent barrier properties. Ideally, the oxygen permeability of the aluminum foil should be <0.005 cm³/m²/day, and the moisture permeability should be <0.1 g/m²/day. It must completely block light (especially ultraviolet light) to prevent the tomato sauce from fading and losing flavor, while also preventing the invasion of external microorganisms and extending the product's shelf life.
Furthermore, given the viscous texture of tomato sauce, the aluminum foil must also have a certain degree of impermeability to prevent the sauce from seeping into the outer layer of the container, causing contamination and waste.
3. Temperature and Corrosion Resistance Requirements
Tomato sauce production often employs a hot-fill process, with temperatures reaching 85-95℃. Therefore, the inner aluminum foil lining must withstand temperatures ranging from -20℃ to 250℃, without melting, cracking, or releasing harmful substances at high temperatures, and without becoming brittle during low-temperature storage.
Simultaneously, to address the acidic corrosion of tomato sauce, it is recommended to use epoxy or polyamide coated aluminum foil to reduce aluminum ion migration. The coating must adhere firmly, not peel off after high-temperature cooking, and remain odorless, ensuring stable performance even after long-term contact with tomato sauce.
4. Processing and Compatibility Requirements
The aluminum foil seal must possess good ductility and formability. During stamping and container bonding, even after folding and edge rolling, it should not crack or break, adhering tightly to the container wall without wrinkles or gaps, preventing "air pockets" that could lead to barrier failure.
Meanwhile, the aluminum foil needs to be easy to heat-seal, providing a good seal with the container opening to effectively prevent leakage, and it should not easily break when opened, balancing sealing performance and ease of use. Furthermore, the aluminum foil must be compatible with printing processes, allowing for the printing of product information as needed, facilitating brand traceability.
Product Specifications
Ketchup containers come in various sizes, from single-use small packages (10-70g) to family packs (320g-1L) and large packages (1-220L), requiring flexible adaptation of the corresponding inner aluminum foil specifications.
1. Thickness
Thickness is a key factor affecting the barrier properties and puncture resistance of aluminum foil. Based on the packaging requirements of ketchup, mainstream thicknesses are divided into three levels to suit different container types:
- Single-use small packages (10-70g, such as fast food packets): Thickness 0.012-0.015mm (12-15μm), balancing thinness and basic barrier properties, with lower cost, suitable for small aluminum foil bag liners;
- Family packs (320g-1L, such as stand-up spout pouches, PP cups): Thickness 0.018-0.025mm (18-25μm), some use coated aluminum foil, with thicknesses reaching 50-70μm (before embossing), enhancing corrosion resistance and barrier properties, suitable for medium-capacity containers;
- Large packaging (1-220L, such as aseptic box inner bag): Thickness 0.030-0.040mm (30-40μm), thicker material, puncture-resistant and tensile-resistant, able to withstand the pressure of large packaging, preventing damage during transportation.
Additional note: Thickness deviation must be controlled within ±0.002mm to ensure batch-to-batch performance stability and avoid differences in barrier properties due to uneven thickness.
2. Width and Length
Width and length need to be adjusted flexibly according to the container's diameter and height. The following are common specifications for reference; customization is available upon request:
- Width: Mainstream range 200-1200mm. For PP cups, the width of the aluminum foil lining corresponds to the container diameter, commonly 37mm, 43mm/48mm, 59mm, 72mm, 81mm, etc. The width of the aluminum foil lining for stand-up spout pouches is mostly 150-300mm, while larger packaging can have aluminum foil linings reaching 800-1200mm.
- Length: Supplied in rolls, mainstream length 500-2000m/roll. Customization is available according to production needs. Small batch orders can be adjusted to 100-500m/roll for small manufacturers.
3. Other Key Specifications
- Inner Diameter: Standard inner diameter of the paper core for roll aluminum foil is 76mm, with a customized inner diameter of 152mm, adaptable to different packaging machine models to ensure smooth foil output and avoid jamming;
- Surface Treatment: Available in glossy and matte finishes. Glossy aluminum foil offers better adhesion, while matte aluminum foil facilitates printing. The choice depends on the container's appearance requirements. Some products undergo coating treatment (such as epoxy coating) to enhance acid resistance;
- Hardness: Uses soft aluminum foil (H18 temper), with good ductility, facilitating adhesion to the container's inner wall and preventing damage during forming;
- Puncture Strength: ≥1.5N, capable of withstanding punctures from small impurities in tomato sauce, preventing leakage.
