          Aircon aluminum foil is primarily used as fin stock in evaporators and condensers. Its job is simple but demanding: transfer heat efficiently, form consistently at high speed, and resist water retention, corrosion, and coating failure during the equipment service life.

          For procurement teams, the leading concern is often not base-metal thickness. It is hydrophilic coating durability. A low initial water contact angle may look acceptable, but poor adhesion can cause coating loss after stamping, expansion, salt exposure, or repeated wet-dry cycles. That can reduce condensate drainage and increase odor, corrosion, and coil-blockage risk.

          Select the Alloy, Temper, and Surface for the Coil Design

          HVAC fin material is commonly supplied in 1xxx series aluminum for high formability and thermal conductivity, or 3xxx series material where higher strength is needed. The correct choice depends on fin geometry, tube expansion method, fin pitch, corrosion environment, and forming speed.

          For conventional high-volume fin production, 1100 Aluminum Foil for Battery and Air Conditioner can be evaluated where deep forming and stable fin pressing are priorities. Where the press design requires added strength, a 3xxx Aluminum grade should be assessed through plant trials rather than selected only by nominal alloy name.

          Specify the finished condition, not only the incoming substrate. The purchase specification should state:

          • Alloy and temper under the agreed standard.
          • Nominal thickness, permitted tolerance, width, edge condition, and coil inside diameter.
          • Maximum coil mass and allowable weld count per coil.
          • Surface requirement on both sides: mill finish, hydrophilic, epoxy, or other functional coating.
          • Required mechanical properties after annealing, if applicable.
          • Pinhole, oil, scratch, dent, and coating-defect acceptance limits.
          • Packaging barrier, desiccant requirement, and maximum storage humidity.

          Aluminum foil is generally classified as material below 0.2 mm thick in EN 546 terminology. However, the applicable technical document must match the order: ASTM B209/B209M is commonly used for aluminum and aluminum-alloy flat products, ASTM B479/B479M covers annealed aluminum foil, and EN 546 series addresses aluminum foil technical requirements. Do not mix tolerance tables from different standards without a written agreement.

          Make Hydrophilic Coating Durability a Measurable Requirement

          A hydrophilic surface encourages condensate to spread into a film rather than form droplets. This supports drainage through narrow fin spacing. The coating must remain functional after fabrication and environmental exposure.

          Use a qualification plan that separates initial performance from retained performance.

          ISO 9227 specifies neutral salt spray test methods, but it does not itself establish a pass/fail rating for an HVAC fin coating. The pass/fail criterion must be set by the appliance manufacturer or jointly agreed in the contract. Similarly, a contact-angle result without test liquid, dwell time, instrument settings, and aging condition is not sufficient for lot release.

          For a new supplier, request three evidence sets before approving commercial production:

          1. A certificate of analysis for alloy chemistry and mechanical properties.
          2. Coating-process records showing curing conditions, coat weight or dry-film control, and inspection frequency.
          3. Retained samples tested after simulated forming and agreed environmental exposure.

          If the fins will be exported into the EU, assess chemical compliance for the coating system. REACH obligations can apply to substances in articles, particularly where substances of very high concern are present above applicable thresholds. RoHS may also be relevant when the finished electrical and electronic equipment falls within its scope. Require the coating supplier's current compliance declaration and substance disclosure, dated to the production period.

          Control Cost, Availability, and Incoming Material Risk

          The delivered cost of coated HVAC fin stock should be quoted transparently:

          Metal index + regional premium + rolling conversion + coating conversion + slitting/packing + freight + duties or taxes

          Use an agreed aluminum reference, quotation date, currency, and pricing period. London Metal Exchange pricing is only one part of the metal component; regional premiums, energy costs, freight, and coating chemicals can materially change the delivered figure. A fixed price without an index window transfers market risk to one party and often creates later renegotiation pressure.

          Supply planning should allow for the full conversion route: cast feedstock, hot rolling where required, cold rolling, annealing, surface cleaning, coating, slitting, inspection, and export packing. Coated material has an additional constraint: storage conditions and shelf-life controls. Ask for the coating manufacturer's recommended storage temperature, humidity limits, and maximum storage period before fin pressing.

          Use this receiving checklist for every production lot:

          • Match coil number, net weight, alloy, temper, and width to the certificate and packing list.
          • Inspect packaging for water ingress, crushed edges, telescoping, and transit abrasion.
          • Measure thickness and width across the agreed sampling plan, including both coil edges.
          • Check surface under suitable lighting for scratches, roll marks, coating skips, staining, and embedded particles.
          • Verify coating side identification and unwind direction before loading the press.
          • Retain a labeled sample for traceability through the appliance production cycle.
          • Quarantine any coil with condensation damage until coating adhesion and wettability are rechecked.

          A robust order defines performance after forming and aging, not merely the appearance at dispatch. This approach makes air-conditioning fin material comparable across suppliers, reduces press-line interruptions, and protects coil drainage performance in service.
