Compare 8011, 3003, 1235 & 8079 food‑grade aluminum foil alloys. Check cost‑performance, barrier performance, strength, pros‑cons & typical applications to select the right foil for your food packaging project.

In the food packaging industry, aluminum foil has become a core substrate for products such as snack foods, prepared foods, dairy products, tobacco, and alcohol, thanks to its excellent properties: light-shielding, moisture-proofing, oxygen-blocking, and high-temperature resistance. While there are numerous grades of aluminium foil for food packaging on the market, the 8011, 3003, 1235, and 8079 alloys are the mainstream choices—widely used and highly versatile. How do they differ, and how should one choose?

I. 8011 Aluminum Foil: The Top Choice for Cost-Performance

8011 aluminum foil is an Al-Fe-Si (aluminum-iron-silicon) alloy. It is—unquestionably—the most widely adopted and popular "all-purpose" aluminum foil in the food packaging sector. Thanks to its balanced performance and exceptional adaptability, it commands a significant share of both consumer and industrial food packaging markets; it is the go-to choice for everyone from small-to-medium packaging plants to large food enterprises, consistently ranking first in market popularity.

In terms of cost, 8011 aluminum foil roll falls into the mid-range, affordable category. With abundant raw material supplies and mature production processes, large-scale manufacturing has significantly driven down costs; its unit price is far lower than that of the high-end 8079 foil and only slightly higher than that of 1235 pure aluminum foil.

Compared to other grades, 8011 aluminium foil wrap offers an optimal balance of strength, toughness, and processability at a low cost. Its superior overall cost-performance ratio makes it the best choice for controlling packaging expenses.

Its applications cover the full spectrum of conventional food packaging, making it suitable for a vast array of scenarios. It is primarily used for composite flexible packaging, aluminum foil meal containers, bottle cap sealing foils, PTP (Press-Through-Pack) blister packaging for pharmaceuticals and food, composite layers for cling film, and sealing films for prepared foods. Common items—such as snack bags, aluminum takeout containers, and beverage bottle seals—mostly utilize 8011 aluminum foil.

Its only drawback is a slightly higher pinhole rate compared to 8079 in ultra-thin specifications, making it unsuitable for high-end, precision packaging applications requiring ultra-high barrier performance.

II. 3003 Aluminum Foil: Specialized for Rigid Packaging

3003 aluminum foil is an Al-Mn (aluminum-manganese) alloy foil, distinguished in the food packaging sector for its high strength and high toughness. Compared to 8-series aluminum foil, it offers superior tensile strength, tear resistance, and stamping performance, making it less prone to deformation or damage. While its market penetration is lower than that of the 8011 and 1235 grades due to its specialized nature, it holds an irreplaceable position in the rigid food packaging sector, boasting a precise and highly loyal customer base.

In terms of cost, 3003 aluminum foil falls into the mid-to-high price range. Its manganese alloy composition enhances material hardness and stability; consequently, raw material costs and processing complexity exceed those of the 8011 grade. While its unit price is higher than that of 8011 and 1235 foils—second only to the premium 8079 grade—its unique performance characteristics make the cost premium manageable in specialized applications, positioning it as a cost-effective choice for rigid packaging.

It is primarily used in rigid food packaging applications requiring load-bearing capacity, crush resistance, and bendability. Key applications include heavy-gauge aluminum foil food containers, large-capacity fresh-keeping foil boxes, rigid packaging for frozen foods, composite cushioning packaging, and high-temperature-resistant baking foil liners.

For scenarios involving repeated bending, load-bearing, and low-temperature freezing, the stability of 3003 aluminum foil far surpasses other grades, effectively preventing issues such as cracking, breakage, and leakage.

III. 1235 Aluminum Foil

1235 aluminium foil is a high-purity aluminum foil with an aluminum content of ≥99.35%; characterized by its pure composition and soft texture, it serves as a standard entry-level grade for food packaging. Thanks to its extremely low price, it enjoys immense demand and enduring popularity in the market for simple, low-end packaging. However, due to performance limitations, it is unsuitable for mid-to-high-end precision packaging, with its market reach concentrated in the basic packaging sector.

Regarding cost, 1235 is the most economical option among the four grades. Its pure aluminum composition allows for simple processing and mass production; the absence of expensive alloying elements results in the lowest raw material and processing costs. It minimizes production expenses for simple packaging, making it the top choice for basic packaging applications with limited budgets.

It is primarily used for lightweight, simple food packaging that does not require high barrier properties. Typical applications include cigarette packaging foil, simple wrappers for candies and chocolates, standard food label foil, lightweight composite packaging, and simple disposable food sealing films.

Its advantages lie in its lightweight, thin, and pliable nature, allowing it to conform easily to shapes; however, its drawbacks include low strength, a tendency to tear, and moderate barrier properties, making it unsuitable for long-term food packaging that requires high levels of moisture resistance, light protection, and freshness preservation.

IV. 8079 Aluminum Foil: Specialized for Precision Packaging

8079 aluminum foil is a high-end, modified alloy from the 8000 series. Formulated with low silicon and high iron content, it currently represents the highest-performing and most premium precision foil material in the food packaging sector. Distinguished by an ultra-low pinhole rate, superior barrier properties, and excellent ductility and conformability, it is the preferred choice for high-end food and pharmaceutical packaging. It enjoys widespread recognition in the premium market and is synonymous with high-quality packaging; however, due to its higher price point, it is less ubiquitous than the 8011 grade.

In terms of cost, 8079 sits at the top tier among the four types. Its specialized alloy composition, precision manufacturing processes, and rigorous quality control standards drive up production costs, resulting in a unit price significantly higher than that of the other three foil types. Despite the higher initial cost, its stability and low scrap rate meet the demands for premium packaging, aligning well with the pricing structures of high-end products.

Applications focus on premium food packaging scenarios requiring superior freshness preservation, high barrier performance, and precision. It is primarily used for sealed composite packaging for high-end dairy products, freeze-dried foods, premium snacks, and functional foods. Additionally, it is widely utilized in aseptic food packaging, precision moisture- and light-proof packaging, multi-layer composite flexible packaging, and as a substrate for stand-up pouches.

Even in ultra-thin specifications, it maintains minimal pinholes and excellent airtightness, effectively locking in flavor and blocking moisture and oxygen. By maximizing shelf life, it serves as the packaging material of choice for premium food brands.
