In the post-pandemic era, the global markets for food takeaway, airline catering, bakery prefabricated food and outdoor barbecue keep expanding. Featuring five core strengths including high temperature resistance, microwave and oven compatibility, recyclability, light weight and superior sealing performance, food-grade aluminum foil containers have gradually replaced plastic and paper food containers, becoming the mainstream disposable food containers in Europe, America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Japan and South Korea.

A standardized system for international aluminum foil alloys for food containers has been established, with four mainstream types available on the market: 8011, 3003, 8021 and 1235. Among them, 8011 and 3003 aluminum foils account for over 90% of the global market share of food container aluminum foils, meeting the mass production demands of most overseas food containers.

I. Types of Aluminum Foil Food Containers

1. General Takeaway Fast-Food Containers

Including single-compartment flat-bottom containers, two/three-compartment bento boxes and round bowl takeaway boxes, these products apply to European and American fast food, street food in Southeast Asia and cross-border supermarket takeaway services. Featuring low cost, mass producibility and shallow stamping forming, they come with relatively thin wall thickness, suitable for dining scenarios under normal temperature and short-time heating conditions. Main base material: 8011-O tempered aluminum foil.

2. Special Containers for Bakery & Prefabricated Food

Covering tart cups, baking molds for cakes, deep-drawn aluminum foil containers for baked rice, and sealed aluminum foil boxes for prefabricated dishes. These containers require deep drawing craftsmanship, feature high-temperature deformation resistance and adapt to full-process oven baking; some are equipped with film lamination sealing technology with high molding difficulty. Main base materials: 3003-O tempered aluminum foil and 8021 aluminum foil.

3. High-End Catering Containers for Aviation & High-Speed Rail

Divided compartment catering containers for civil aviation and hot food containers for high-speed rails. They are required to resist compression and bending, withstand corrosion from soup, oil and acid-base substances, avoid cracking under repeated temperature changes, and comply with EU heavy metal standards for food-contact materials. With irregular structures and reinforced corners, they belong to high-end rigid food containers. Main base material: food-grade 3003 aluminum foil.

4. Reinforced Containers for Outdoor Barbecue

Including barbecue trays, aluminum foil boxes for grilled fish and heating containers for camping use. Exposed to high oil temperature and open-flame ambient heat, such containers require high puncture resistance and load-bearing capacity, with thickened wall thickness and cost-performance balance. Main base materials: thickened 8011 aluminum foil and entry-level 3003 aluminum foil.

5. Niche Minimalist Food Containers

Such as aluminum foil lids for yogurt cups and mini dessert trays. They require extremely high aluminum purity with no heavy metal precipitation, mostly made of high-purity 1235 aluminum foil. Rarely used for rigid molded containers, 1235 aluminum foil is not the mainstream material for food containers.

II. 8011 Aluminum Foil

1. Core Alloy Composition Characteristics

8011 aluminum foil for container is a binary aluminum-iron alloy with an aluminum content of approximately 98.7%, iron content of 0.4%-0.8% and silicon content of 0.2%-0.5%, without manganese addition. All commercially available food-container-grade 8011 aluminum foil is O-temper annealed soft aluminum foil, with an elongation rate above 35%, compatible with mass production by high-speed stamping machines.

2. Core Performance Advantages

First, prominent cost advantage: its raw material price is 8%-12% lower than that of 3003 aluminum foil, ideal for large-volume low-priced overseas orders. Second, excellent shallow forming performance: it hardly cracks during high-speed stamping with a low reject rate, fit for simple-shaped containers. Third, stable food safety: resistant to corrosion from neutral soup, clean water and conventional edible oil, meeting short-term food holding demands for takeaway scenarios. Fourth, lightweight and easy to process: it can be manufactured into ultra-thin containers with a thickness ranging from 0.018mm to 0.03mm, cutting cross-border logistics freight costs.

3. Target Global Application Scenarios

l Low-priced compartmented bento boxes for fast food in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

l Shallow takeaway boxes for simple prefabricated food in supermarkets.

l Food containers for non-high-temperature and non-acidic soup food.

4. Application Limitations

It has weak acid and alkali resistance, and cannot hold acidic ingredients such as tomato juice, lemon juice, sour and spicy sauces for a long time. It is prone to cracking in deep drawing processing, so it cannot be made into irregular, heightened or multi-angle complex containers. It may deform slightly after repeated high-temperature heating, making it inapplicable for professional high-temperature scenarios including aviation catering and bakery production.

III. 3003 Aluminum Foil

1. Core Alloy Composition Characteristics

3003 aluminum foil for food tray is a classic aluminum-manganese anti-rust alloy with a manganese content of 1.0%-1.5% and an aluminum content of 96%-97%. Manganese refines alloy grains, granting it far higher structural strength and anti-rust performance than 8-series aluminum foil. O-temper soft aluminum foil is commonly used for food containers, while H24 tempered aluminum foil is adopted for part of thickened high-end containers.

2. Core Performance Advantages

First, superior corrosion resistance: it can long resist erosion from acidic soup, salt and fermented sauces, suitable for Western-style sauces and sour-spicy cuisines in Southeast Asia. Second, outstanding deep drawing performance: it can be integrally molded into multi-compartment, heightened arc-shaped and irregular snap-fit aviation containers without corner cracking. Third, high-temperature and deformation resistance: it withstands long-term oven baking at 230℃ and repeated microwave heating, featuring load-bearing and drop resistance, and is not easy to collapse during stacked transportation. Fourth, enhanced recyclability: it is the preferred material for EU carbon-neutral overseas orders.

4. Application Limitations

It has higher raw material and processing costs, leading to poor cost-performance for simple containers processed via high-speed shallow stamping. It features relatively high hardness, making the processing of ultra-thin specifications harder than 8011 aluminum foil, so it is rarely used for small-size ultra-thin food containers.
