Best Blister Packaging Materials for South American Pharmaceutical Markets
Professional analysis of PTP aluminum foil, cold formed foil and PVDC blister for South American pharmaceutical packaging. High barrier, humidity & UV resistance, compliant solutions for diverse tropical climate drug packaging demands.
The South American pharmaceutical market is undergoing rapid and standardized development. Core countries like Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia not only have huge consumer demand for oral medications, generic drugs, and health supplements, but have also successively introduced stringent compliance standards and environmental regulations for pharmaceutical packaging.
Unlike temperate markets, most of South America has an tropical climate with high humidity. The high temperature, high humidity, and strong ultraviolet radiation of this environment place higher demands on the barrier properties, stability, and weather resistance of pharmaceutical blister packaging.

PTP aluminum foil
PTP pharmaceutical aluminum foil is a classic cap material for pharmaceutical blister packaging and is the most widely used and versatile packaging material in the South American market. Officially called pharmaceutical blister packaging aluminum foil, it is mostly made of 8011-H18 pharmaceutical grade aluminum alloy and belongs to Class A packaging materials that come into direct contact with pharmaceuticals, fully complying with the hygiene standards of pharmaceutical packaging materials in many South American countries.
Its core structure consists of a protective layer, a printing layer, an aluminum foil substrate, and a heat-sealing layer. It is lightweight, thin, and highly flexible, making it suitable for high-speed heat-sealing blister pack production lines. This results in high production efficiency and low overall cost, making it perfectly suited for the high-demand pharmaceutical products in South America, such as common tablets, capsules, vitamin supplements, and common cold medicines. In terms of performance, PTP aluminum foil possesses excellent light-blocking, airtightness, and puncture resistance, effectively blocking light and air, preventing oxidation and photodegradation of common pharmaceuticals.
Specifically for the South American distribution scenario, the PTP aluminum foil, with its optimized anti-corrosion coating, can withstand long-term storage in high-humidity environments without easily experiencing oxidation, blackening, or heat-seal detachment. Furthermore, the material has excellent printability, allowing for clear printing of drug traceability codes and batch information, meeting the drug serialization traceability requirements of countries like Argentina, thus balancing compliance and practicality.
However, PTP aluminum foil has certain performance limitations. When used alone, its moisture-proof and water vapor-proof properties are limited, making it unsuitable for highly hygroscopic and highly active pharmaceutical ingredients. It is only suitable for stable, conventional drugs with a shelf life of 24 months or less, making it the optimal choice for affordable, widely circulated basic pharmaceuticals in South America.
Cold formed aluminum foil
Cold-formed aluminum foil (aluminum-aluminum blister foil ) is a core, essential material in the high-end pharmaceutical market of South America. It focuses on ultimate barrier protection, specifically addressing the storage challenges of highly sensitive drugs in tropical, humid climates. It is also one of the highest-level protective pharmaceutical blister materials currently available.
Its standard structure is a three-layer composite of OPA/aluminum foil/PVC, formed using a room-temperature cold-pressing process. No high-temperature heating is required, preventing thermal stress damage, and the material exhibits extremely high stability.
In terms of performance, cold-formed aluminum foil boasts industry-leading barrier capabilities, with a water vapor permeability of less than 0.02 g/m²/day and an oxygen permeability approaching zero. It achieves complete light protection, moisture resistance, oxygen barrier, and acid and alkali resistance, thoroughly isolating the pharmaceuticals from the effects of external temperature and humidity changes. In the tropical, humid environment of South America (Level IVb), this material can stably extend the shelf life of highly sensitive pharmaceuticals to over 36 months, far exceeding the protective effect of ordinary blister materials.
This material is primarily suitable for high-value-added pharmaceuticals in the South American market, including sustained-release and controlled-release formulations, biologics, highly active APIs, antibiotics, and targeted therapies—pharmaceuticals that are prone to moisture absorption, oxidation, and decomposition.
Simultaneously, the robust, tamper-proof, and breakage-resistant structure of the cold-formed aluminum foil blister pack makes it suitable for the complex distribution scenarios of long-distance logistics and multi-layered distribution in South America, significantly reducing pharmaceutical transportation losses.
Compared to PTP aluminum foil, cold-formed aluminum foil is more expensive and has a slower forming speed, making it unsuitable for large-scale use of low-end generic drugs. The alu alu foil thickness precisely matches the packaging needs of high-end prescription drugs and imported pharmaceuticals in South America, providing core packaging protection for high-value pharmaceuticals entering the South American market.
PVDC rigid
The PVDC blister boasts exceptional moisture and oxygen barrier capabilities, 5-10 times stronger than ordinary PVC materials. This effectively addresses the high humidity and temperature of South America, resolving the issues of moisture absorption and pharmaceutical deterioration associated with ordinary blister packs. Furthermore, the material can be directly thermoformed, compatible with conventional high-speed blister production lines without equipment changes, resulting in significantly higher production efficiency than cold-formed aluminum foil, at approximately 60% of the cost of aluminum-aluminum blister packs.
Regarding compliance, high-quality pharmaceutical-grade PVDC materials exhibit low impurity content and migration levels, meeting the environmental recycling requirements of Chile and Colombia. This mitigates the environmental compliance risks associated with ordinary PVC materials and complies with Argentina's CAA safety standards for pharmaceutical contact materials.
It is suitable for a wide range of products, including probiotics, enzymes, high-end health supplements, general sustained-release medications, and traditional Chinese medicines—mid-range pharmaceuticals that are sensitive to humidity but do not require extreme protection.
It should be noted that PVDC materials cannot completely block light and their weather resistance is slightly inferior to that of aluminum foil. They are not suitable for drugs that are sensitive to strong light or have extremely high activity. They cannot replace cold-formed aluminum foil in high-end protective applications. They are the best compromise for the large-scale export of mid-range pharmaceuticals to South America.
